3 Tips on Creating & Selling your own Fonts

Selling fonts for passive income has completely transformed my business. I love creating my own fonts, but having the option to sell them for a profit is just icing on the cake. It’s so amazing to see how designers from all over are using my fonts in their branding projects — and it’s even better knowing that these fonts are helping someone build their business month after month. I’ve found that selling fonts is one of the most passive ways to make money in design. You create a single product, add it to your store or marketplace, and then watch as people purchase it over and over again for as long as you want to keep the product listed. There are some things you should consider when creating your own line of custom typefaces; when you’re creating your fonts and building your font store, there are a few things to keep in mind.

01.

First, you need to create a product that people want. Try to find an angle that makes your fonts stand out from the competition — for example, by offering styles that you haven’t seen done, or combining different aesthetics into one font. Next, make sure the font files themselves are high quality and easy to use — this will help ensure customers don’t have any issues with their new purchase!

02.

Second, make sure you have a website/storefront that presents your new product well. Don’t forget to include some examples of how people can use the font in their projects — this will help potential customers see what they might be able to do with it. Creating a handful of eye-catching slides that showcase the use of the font can help the customer envision its use.

03.

Finally, make sure you’re curating a portfolio of fonts that are individual to you. I've created a brand that is unique and a reflection of who I am. By designing fonts and styles that haven't been done before, and seeing my work used by other designers, has made me feel proud of my own craftsmanship. Combining my inspiration from several different sources helped me create something unique that stands out amongst the crowd on Creative Market.

The most important thing is to get your fonts out there. Create a website, write blog posts about the font’s creation process or talk about how people can use it on social media— whatever works best for you!
